Salt Damage Prevention for Boats

Salt water and salt air are among the most destructive forces for marine vessels. Here is how to prevent salt damage:

Flush After Every Use

Rinse your boat thoroughly with fresh water after every trip in salt water. Pay special attention to the engine, fittings and upholstery. Salt crystals cause corrosion and fabric deterioration.

Protective Coatings

Apply corrosion inhibitors to metal parts and UV protectant to upholstery. These coatings create barriers that prevent salt from reaching vulnerable surfaces. Reapply regularly during heavy use.

Cleaning Routine

Wash your boat with fresh water and mild soap weekly. Remove salt residue from all surfaces before it accumulates. Pay attention to seams, stitching and crevices where salt collects.

Ventilation

Good airflow prevents salt air from settling on surfaces. Open hatches and compartments when docked. Use dehumidifiers in enclosed spaces to reduce salt-laden moisture.
